A great way to see the gardens if you don’t want to walk much. The guides really know their stuff and can answer all sorts of questions. What’s about the Peacock Fountain? Which trees are best for making bows and arrows? Do bananas grow in Christchurch?

It is particularly impressive in spring when the rhododendrons, azaleas and daffodil woodland are in riotous bloom

There are thematic gardens to explore. The Botanic Gardens are huge and well designed. Central Rose Garden has a selection of rambling heritage roses that delight in the summer months. Great place to stop and smell the flowers. The conservatory complex which includes Cuningham House, a large Victorian glasshouse containing a tropical collection. Stunning! The Fernery has an array of native New Zealand ferns or explore the Herb Garden, located by the Curator’s House.

A walk along the Avon river is always a great idea

There is an excellent shop and cafe. Ilex Cafe is a must visit for beautiful food and good vibes. Highly recommended.

Even more. Children Welcome! A pool and playground are a lot of fun. Or try punting and canoe or relax on Archery Lawn around the Christchurch Botanic Gardens.
